Hello there from Pensacola Fl.
Our local Red Cross chapter has put out requests for volunteers, but says it may be as much as six weeks before a coordinated effort from this area is able to reach New Orleans.
I would like to get in and help sooner than that, in whatever capacity I can. Even if that means helping "from here," that would be preferable to sitting here doing nothing.
What can I do? Please, let me know.
Samuel

Hi Samuel,
Right now I'm posting as many resources as I can find so possibly people like you can find contacts to connect with so you can put your time and efforts to good use, if you can leave your location and do that.
Currently we really need someone to act as a coordinator here. We need lots and lots of coordinators actually, especially a team that can put together a transportation network for people like you who are ready to go, but don't have a clear place to go to.
If you can do that, it would be great! If not, I hope the information I'm currently posting might provide some contact information that you can use.

Would they be able to provide food and shelter for evacuees if they somehow show up? Would they collect names of people who would be willing to house people and coordinate that effort locally. If they can help the evacuees in town in any way, put a note about it on the appropriate wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resources_for_the_Aftermath_of_Hurricane_Katrina
and let volunteer drivers take them there if it happens to work out.
I would encourage everyone to do the same -- contact your local relief agencies to find out where help is available, and post this information where people can find it. Each of us can't do it alone, so we need to combine our efforts to get the job done.
