Did anyone watch this last night? I think it's playing again tonight, and will likely play several times over the next month or so.

It was on Discovery Channel.

It made me cry, but then most things do. The animals were beautiful and Tim Treadwell was so compassionate with them.

It's a shame his mission was ended by the very thing he was trying to save, the bears.

Timothy Treadwell, tireless and passionate advocate for grizzly bears, was killed in October 2003 by the beast he so fervently adored and tried to protect. His remains, along with those of his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were discovered near their campsite in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Preserve. They had been mauled and devoured by a grizzly, the first known victims of a bear attack in the park. The bear suspected of the killings was later shot by park officials.

It's a very poignant documentary of his 13 summers spent in the Kodiak AK wildlife preserves trying to bring the problem of poaching, government inaction, and other wildlife issues to light.

He over came drug abuse and alcoholism in the wilds there. And while he still fought his demons (don't we all), his tapes show a very tender soul.

Timothy and his current girlfriend were killed by a bear at the end of the season in 2003. They weren't even supposed to be there. Most of "his" bears had gone into hibernation and him and Amie were flying back home. Due to rude and argumentative airline employees, he stated he was pretty much fed up with the human world and returned to the wildlife preserve only to meet his demise.

Very, VERY moving story.

The October 2003 write up of the mauling deaths:

His Grizzly People website:

A google search of "Timothy Treadwell" will bring up dozens upon dozens of hateful, cruel, and downright mean-spirited things said by this uncompassionate being called the "human".

Makes me ashamed.

Having read more from the bear experts, I certainly understand their reasons for thinking the way they do, that Timothy Treadwell was not handling the situation in the best possible manner.

However, I do not feel that takes away one bit from his passion and love of these animals. The man had a tremendous capability for love and a unique soul IMO.

The documentary Grizzly Man, which had its broadcast-TV premiere this weekend, revisits the life and violent death of Timothy Treadwell, a controversial wildlife activist who spent 13 summers living among bears in the Alaskan wilderness.

Treadwell was discovered dead and partially eaten by one of his beloved grizzlies at his campsite in Katmai National Park in the fall of 2003. His girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, was also killed.

I really want to see this even if I have to tape it. And yes IA, you know how good I am at taping things AFTER the fact! I will try to be on top of it. I called the cable company and I can't get DVR..that would have saved me alot of hassle but I'm not willing to upgrade to digital with all the extra costs just for the DVR. Soooo, I learn the VCR again!

Boy, IA, you really keep us up to date! I'd love to see this, so I too will find it and record it.

Consider yourself "bear hugged" for your thoughtful approach to an emotional situation like this. Balance is a good and needed quality!
