Man, I love that show. No matter what mood I'm in, watching her always makes me laugh. Her mom is a hoot as well.

She was on one the awards shows not too long ago and she went running up on stage with a little camcorder. She had promised the viewers a shot of what it looked like from up on the stage and she came through with the promise. Did you happen to see it?
I think what I like about her is she is so down to earth. And her dancing is so darn funny!

I remember seeing that show, and also the awards show that she couldn't be at so she sent a cardboard cut out of herself, that was a riot. You are right Debby, she is down to earth, I just love watching her.

Yes she is down to earth and I also saw the same show. She is very comfortable in her own skin I like to say. I can't imagine her with a ton of makeup artists around her before a show either. I have seen some of these other hosts without makeup and oh dear lord its enough to scare the teeth out of ones head!

The Ellen DeGeneres Show, if you get the chance you should watch it. She can change your whole day.
Please allow me to encourage any reader to consider something. Ellen is packaged much like Rosie O'Donnell was. O'Donnell was termed "The Queen of Nice" for a reason. She wasn't and isn't nice and never has been. O'Donnell is a very angry and bitter person. Her stand-up career was based on the hatred and highly passive aggressive snide comments toward heterosexual women, thin women, and soccer moms. Much of her humor was bitter based. However, in Hollywood certain homosexuals will find advocates. RD was fortunate enough to fall into a circle of advocates. O'Donnell denied her homosexuality and hid it but it was obvious, early on, to many people. So, she was given roles and opportunities. She can be credited with some talent but that isn't what she is known for regarding her general persona. Eventually she got smart enough to market herself and package herself as the Queen of Nice. The very women she generally hated she began trying to find acceptance through. The truth is if the average viewer were around Rosie O'Donnell for 60 days, every day, they would find that the Queen of Nice is another type of Queen, the Queen of Drama and Bitterness.
Though Ellen's personality might be a bit closer to what is portrayed on her television program she isn't a very happy camper either. But those that packaged Rosie are quite similar to those that package Ellen. What you see on television isn't the real Ellen but what she wants you to see. She wants you to see her dancing, laughing and being in an overall happy mood. But a lot of her career was based angry material. Interestingly, much like Rosie, Ellen has made it an effort to appeal to the very people and lifestyle she has rejected, in general, female heterosexuals. But daytime (not an insult to you by the way) television viewers are different than evening viewers. Those that have a situation in life that directs them to the television during the day are different demographically than evening viewers.
Does this make any difference if one is entertained? Well actors in movies are understood to be acting. But hosts of shows are expected to more true to their persona. And while their is some license for entertainment and granted Rosie O'Donnell is a far more bitter, sour and angry soul that Ellen, they both, to me, seem disingenous.

Well, gee, DrD, do you have an opinon to share? :toot:
Let's face it, actors and personalities, just like politicians have to create images for themselves. Who wants to watch someone who could just as easily be our next door neighbor?
To be honest, I'm not very big on daytime or nightime TV. I do find that all of these show hosts, Oprah included are pretty fake after awhile. All the happiness and glowing gets to me eventually! :sad7:
I'm not much of a Rosie O'Donnel fan either. I never paid her much attention, but I do remember that when it came out that she uses armed body guards after making a big issue of gun control. That wasn't too cool. But I guess all things considered, she's not on the top of my list of people that I think about!
Neither is Ellen. I haven't seen her new show. I used to like her sit-com, but I really lost interest in the whole "coming out" business. Sure, I watched it, but ho-hum! It didn't move me. I guess I know enough gay people that this is not some big deal to me. Like we never figured out that she was gay from the get go!
Oh well, I guess I'm just not into mainstream media enough to have much of an opinion here, but why would that stop me? :dunce:
Now if you want to discuss Bill O'Reilly, I can get into that! I do still tape his shows and speed through most of them just to see if he's come up with a new issue for a change! Otherwise, I guess I really am a media dunce! I hardly know any of the actors who are around these days. I still think Johnny Depp is new and groovy, and I haven't had a crush on an actor since Andy Garcia was still young and sexy! I just saw him the other day, and he's getting OLD! Man, that really did my head in!
And no, I'm not 95 yet, just bored with most media these days. Maybe that's why I'm starting my own radio station! I have to have some way of amusing myself, besides being a Betty Broderick Basher, don't I? :jumpers:

I love that show too! Ellen is awesome. She comes off as so hip and cool, but I think that's because she doesn't try to be cool - she's just herself. She's so funny too, and she can make fun of herself - I like that.

You know, I really do get irritated hearing how 'horrible' the real people behind our favorite personalities are. The fact of the matter is, there are very few of us who could stand up to the kind of media scrutiny that television and political celebrities accept as part of their job. Imagine snapping at your child in irritation - and having it splashed across the gossip rags the next day along with speculation that you're a child abuser.
I enjoy watching Ellen because she makes me smile. I don't care if she does it because it makes money for her, and I don't really give a rat's tail if she's pandering to my demographic (white het female over 40) because that's where the best market is. She's not my family or my best friend, so I don't have to put up with her moodiness or anything else. I get to enjoy her being funny, smart and original.

I think thats why I like her so much, other than the fact that she makes me laugh, she is as real as real can be. And I believe what you see on her show is what you see in her real life.

So why is it that people can't just accept what others have to offer without referencing 'the entire package'? This probably deserves its own thread, but it's the post here about what a nasty person Ellen is that makes me think of it. Here's what I mean.. Ellen DeGeneres is a comic - she's grown into something more, but she is, from the start. a stand up comic. She has a way of interviewing people and bringing out their own goofy side to match hers that I thoroughly enjoy. The fact that she's lesbian, that she slants her rants, that she has a nasty temper... that has no effect on how funny she is.
A few years back (okay, more than a few years) Wham hit the airwaves with a couple of hits in a row. A coworker informed me that he didn't like their music because he'd heard that George Michael is gay. I still don't get the connection, okay? I can understand 'I don't like their music because it promotes homosexuality' or 'I won't support their music because I refuse to support their lifestyle' but... their music sucks because they're gay?
In most cases, a celebrity's personal life has nothing to do with their skill at their craft. So... why do so many people care?

I don't watch daytime tv, or any tv at all for that matter, but I find that I do enjoy Ellen's show when I catch her. I like her way more than Rosie O'Donnell, but that's just my opinion. Ellen is funny and unique. I like her interviewing style too...especially when she had Paul McCartney on her show, and they were going back and forth with:
"Do I call you Sir? Do you like to be called Sir.."
"King."
"King Paul..."
"That'll do."
"Do you want me to call you Sir?"
"No, you can just call me Paul."
"Yeah, really? Okay Paul."
"Okay Ellen."
"Okay Paul."
"Okay Ellie."
"Okay Pauly-Paul."
"Okay Ellie-baby!"
Looooved it.

I really don't get much of a chance to watch her show either because I don't watch tv during the day, but I will watch it if I see it's on. She is a very talented and funny person. I do not agree with you lifestyle, but that does not mean I don't like her as an actress or performer. She seems like a great person and I would be her friend if she lived near me and if she'd accept me.

Because normal everyday people seem to have some sort of fascination with celebs. I don't get it either.
They tend to think that the rich and famous lifestyle is glamerous, perhaps they feel their own life is dull so need to pay more attention to the lives of others?
I dont know

Oh, absolutely and I don't think the other poster meant to imply that you shouldn't. I think the point was just to remind us that the images of many celebrities are created. If you're ok with the product you get, fine and dandy. DrD wasn't saying don't enjoy the product, just remember that's what it is. If the product is good it will stand up to any number of reminders and no beloved icons will be harmed in the writing of these posts. :)

Ellen's show is good because she keeps it entertaining. Other people, like Rosie, feel like they've got to turn their personal life into a political or social issue. This just turns off viewers.

DrD does have a point.
I always liked Ellen, although I don't watch TV so I haven't seen her TV show.
But I did read Anne Hechts (sp?) book years ago and she doesn't describe a happy go lucky lady in the Ellen she knew.
In fact, that Ellen was very selfish and depressed and moody. She was career driven. When her old sitcom "Ellen," was doing well, she was great to be around, but as soon as the reviews were negative or God forbid, it was cancelled, she withdrew into a selfish cocoon.
Anne was an actress, of course, when she met Ellen. But Ellen didn't want Anne to work, in fact, was jealous of any success Anne had.
Especially when Ellen's show was cancelled. She turned off Anne completely, because Anne's career at the time, was doing well.
So, I know it's one sided, but until Ellen writes a serious memoir, because all of her books so far have been humorous, we will never see what the real woman is like.
