Please get the word out to mothers of infants that they can and should begin breastfeeding if they haven't already. Most moms who have had a baby in the last six months can produce milk, even if they did breastfeed in the beginning by putting baby to breast every two hours for 5 to 10 minutes day and night. They will increase about 1 ounce every day and should have a full supply in a few weeks. This will tranfer antibodies to baby from mom, to help them survive in this situation. As supplies are low, it is more effectiv, as wwell, to give water to mom, and have her feed baby. Mother's should be made aware as well that even "safe water" may soon be contaminated and there is a high risk for cholera. washed bottles etc. may pose health threat to babies.
go to lalecheleague.org and click emergency infor for Katrina to get further details and see the report issued by the WHO.

Having nursed my four children I know what a lifesaver this can be even when supplies are available. Thanks for the suggestion!!
