Well I dont like Oprah. Never have and never will.
I feel her shows are just pointless, I cant say I have ever seen anything remotely interesting on there. She loves getting her fellow rich buddies on their, and cmon, the women in the audience look like they've all undergone beauty therapy prior to the show!
Perhaps its just me huh?:p

I agree, Gayle King failed at her own talk show, so now she is riding Oprah's tail coat. I can't stomach any of the women on the View. I hate how they all try and talk over each other.

Actually, after the Oprah discussion, I was trying to think of any talk show that I like ...and I don't think there is one!
The shows like Montel, Springer, etc. all seem to prey on people who will sell their soul to show off on t.v. Oprah gives us celebrities and bad books. What's to watch?????

I don't like any of them either--these shows seem designed to provoke anger in people instead of thought and reason. As many of you have already said, pointless waste of time.

Besides provoking anger in people who need therapy to begin with, I find many of the shows so fake as to be laughable. Like when some person storms on stage to confront her lesbian lover who has run off with her mother!
Like that isn't staged????

The more I see of talk shows in the past couple of decades, the more I miss Phil Donohue. My 20 year old stepdaughter and my 16 year old daughter are addicted to the trashy talk shows and 'reality' garbage shows that make me want to gag. I think the ones that I hate the most are the 'paternity test' shows.. and everyone has done them. The shows have a tendency to make the high school dramas that they're living appear legitimate, validates and encourages the idea of tearing out another girl's hair because your man was looking in her direction... gah!

I don't like Springer either. Sally Jesse Raphael (sorry spelled it wrong I'm sure) is kind of annoying. I really like Ellen, but I don't watch much tv so I don't know who else is on and who is good or bad.

I thought Ellen might be okay but she seemed to get very silly. That's my problem with some many of the talk shows ...they're really silly. Of course, chalk that up to my annoyance with Katie Couric, who I thought was too silly for that early in the morning. She may be more serious now but the impression was so lasting that I'll never watch her nightly show!

I must be there with you, cherry! I've never managed to watch him for more than a minute.....then "where's the remote?"
Which doesn't give me much of a basis for an opinion, other than that I just don't get the guy. What's the appeal, I wonder? Is it one of those cases of "he's cool, so you have to like him"? I think his "cool" is of the contrived kind, which never appeals to me.

Wow, I thought I was the only one!! If I hear "Oprah said......" one more time, I think I'll puke! I don't care what Oprah says! I'm right with you that her show is all about SHALLOW! I don't just dislike her, I'm beginning to think that she's a wart on society. Let's face it, the women who watch the show are zombied out in front of the TV living vicariously through her, instead of getting on with their own lives. Oprah doesn't inspire, she addicts, and she has far, far too much influence for anyone's good, IMO.
Sorry to any Oprah fans out there, but what can I say? I think there are far better icons, and far better uses of time than to be hooked on that show! She's not much better than the afternoon soaps!
Maybe the word I would use to sum her up is "Placebo".

Oh my! And here's another one! Can anyone tell that I'm not big on TV celebs? I haven't managed more than 5 minutes of The View either. I guess I'm just not all about overly polished women obsessing over themselves. There is nothing about any of those women that has caused me enough interest to even find out their names! If I saw them huddled at a party, I'd head for the next room! Am I wrong, or are they more about the latest leg waxing technique than anything to do with reality?

It's amazing, but following along here, I'm fascinated to find that I'm not alone! Someone watches all these shows, but I'm happy enough to not be one of them! I did watch Springer a few times, I think he was one of the pioneers of sleaze tv in the afternoon, along with Sally Jesse. All I could think when watching those shows was if any of those people lived nearby me, I'd be doing everything in my power to get away from them, so why tune in and voluntarily engage my mind in the horror and offensiveness of them?
I was in England when the Jerry Springer show was just beginning to air there. Jerry is a Brit himself, actually, something I didn't know before. Anyway, the very polite Brits were beside themselves that their children were beginning to emulate that horrific behavior. My advice to them is the same I would give to anyone, don't let you kids watch that crap, it's nothing but brain pollution. I mean, why validate the absolute worst behavior anyone could possibly imagine? And that's what these bozos do. They present human slime to our kids under some concept that it's all very cool and entertaining.
All I can say is, no one had better come around me neck swinging and eye bulging, or I'll hit them with the nearest chair! No, I didn't just say that!! :woohoo:

Yes, those were the good old days, weren't they? Donahue used to have really interesting guests and cover important topics. Imagine actually getting a bit of a brain workout in the morning....those days are long gone!
But let's not forget that Oprah took over the ratings from Donahue. She started out with an entirely different premise herself. Then she began spoon feeding us the pap, and it's been downhill from there. It's like we went from being served a nutritious breakfast to becoming addicted to cake and coffee instead. But whose fault is that, when you get right down to it?
Thinking about the wasteland that TV has largely become makes me realize that Livewire.FM is my own personal antidote. I'm really hoping that our radio shows and community here will provide a happy alternative to the mess that's on our screens these days.
If you know of any interesting people who have something constructive and creative to say, please send them our way!! We're looking for something new and different in the way of broadcast hosts!

I agree with everyone. Most talk shows are crap. Really even if I did have time to watch them. I know I could find something better to spend my time doing. I absolutely agree with you about "The View" I used to watch is a little bit, but lately just watching the previews of it makes me sick.

Interesting (and fun!) conversation. I don't watch talk shows and I can't remember when the last time was that I saw a full 60 minutes of one of them... certainly years. I'll admit sometimes I stay on the channel for 5 or 10 minutes when something is FUNNY (the type that comes to mind is "I can't believe he's not the father, I was a thousand percent SURE! It couldn't possibly be any of the other other six dozen guys I slept with that month!") Okay, so extreme example, but some are nearly as bad!

LOL i used to really like her untill she started doing shows on herself LOL. She really is buying into her own hype. I do think its worth it though for all the good she does do. A few shows really help to bring awareness to some serious issue. The debt diet series was really good. I loved the dr phil years as well.

I find this for every talk show.....some good, some bad. I don't watch the topics I am not interested in and I do watch the ones that catch my eye.
I really enjoyed when she had Leo Dicaprio (and I really don't much care for him) talking about the greenhouse effect. I thought it was a great way to share the topic with America.
I also don't like the shows where it is all about her.......but I do think that she offers some good.

I liked the old Oprah shows, when she was still a big girl with big hair and not trying to impress her rich, Hollywood friends. Now, I can't stand her and her fake tears. *gag* It just seems, to me, that everytime something is even remotely sad or shocking, the waterworks start and they just dont come across as being genuine or real.

I have not watched talk shows in years. What did it for me was the episode of Jerry Springer when two grown man where fighting over a blow up doll. And Jerry and the audience were just egging them on I felt so disgusted.
I don't watch any of them anymore the ladies on the View are so annoying I just want to give them one Mike and pass it around, so they would shut up!

I don't like Conan too because her show is outshadowed by Tonight with Jay Leno which is a show similar in nature to Conan's but has a lot more quality and humor into it. Conan's hair distracts me, is he getting bald? He looks so young though.

Tough question. I wouldn't say I don't like but, rather the least I liked is I think Jerry Springer too. I really don't get him at times. I don't know what type of character he is currently portraying but to me it doesn't fit him or is he over acting at sometime. I don't know must be me or something too but I just don't enjoy his talk show that much. I would rather watch Martha Stewart than him.

Another show that bugs the heck out of me is Maury. Honestly, how many times can you do "shocking paternity results", or "am I a woman or a man?" It's just disgusting....

OMG his show cracks me up, I watched it the day a woman was having the 12th man tested to see if he was the "Daddy", How many men did this woman have in such a short window of time, that she doesn't know who the daddy is?

No kidding...not to be TMI, but I haven't slept with that many people in my life, but less in a short enough window to be testing them all for paternity! Gimme a break! The kicker is, every time those girls are 1000000% sure Joe-Schmo sitting on the stage with her is the baby's daddy....

Ugh, I hate Maury too. How many times can he do the same show over and over with the same continous overacting folk? Ugh.
