All you kind volunteers who (like me) feel the need to help, PLEASE watch your back. I live in Corpus Christi, so I may need to transport New Orleanians within my town. I used to be a social worker - although nothing happened to me on the job, it very possibly could have. It's upsetting to consider that people in dire circumstances who need our help could hurt us, but you can't 100% predict the behavior of strangers.
Ladies, don't travel alone, especially w/ strange men. We like to believe that people are generally good at heart, but some people have issues, mental illnesses, or occassionally, are just plain bad.
Pepper spray isn't a bad idea and be alert while driving. Keep 911 on your cell's speed dial and hold the phone close to you all the time.
Most of the tens of thousands of evacuees are surely fine people, but I bet just a few are not so decent. Please remember to be smart and observant! :) And help as much as you can :) -
Good luck to all!
