Home Away from Home
Camps and auditoriums are an efficient way to ?warehouse? people. The victims get food, water and shelter, but do not have the privacy and the freedom to put their lives back together again.
Motels and hotels or nice, but even these accommodations can feel very restrictive after a while.
At the same time we are aware that a number of our local residents have vacant apartments or homes that they are willing to donate to the storm evacuees, these guests within our community.
The Catholic Diocese and the Salvation Army are working to develop a coordinated effort to match landlords and guests. Individuals with rental property are asked to contact the Home Away from Home office at 866-0841. (The office will be staffed by volunteers Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) Salvation Army will then share this information with evacuees at the Red Cross Service Center at the Remington. This program will be available to all churches within the community.
We are also developing a system whereby local churches can ?adopt? a guest family.
We are still working out the details, but hope to have it functioning by 9:00 a.m. Monday, September 12. Once we have the system developed we will share the details with any other community that is interested. And I will be personally available to help other communities set up such an effort.
