Hi Everyone,
I have an idea. For all of those who want to help but don't have alot what about a "Adopt-A-Family" type of program? There are families out there that just need some assistance but no relocation. I know of families that need clothing and staples. And they do not need "new" clothing. What do you think? Anyone interested? Let me know.
Thanks,
Debby

Debbie,
I've been thinking the same thing...it would be great to have an individual family to "adopt". If we can make a human connection with one person, or one family it makes the support more personal. I would love to adopt one myself. Tell me how to do this.
Thanks,
Sandy

Hi Debbie and Sandy,
Good idea. Sounds like another database project :) But bigger. We would want to vet the families asking for help to be sure they are actual victims, etc. ("Vet" is the new, cool work being bandied about to mean evaluate or scrutinize). Though the evaluation wouldn't need to be as extensive as for those seeking a family with which to stay, there is still a danger of developing a relationship with scam artists (on either side of the equation). Or we can simply supply the data and let those involved do the vetting.
Perhaps two databases are in order: one for families seeking help, one for people offering help. We can do with hidden email, where each person enters their email in the database, but the email address doesn't show up in the list. An email link would allow emails to be sent via our server without the recipient or sender knowing the actual email address of the person on the other side.
Anyway, I'm up for further discussion. If we decide to go ahead with it, I'll do the technical stuff. And if it appears to be successful, I'll suggest it to the KatrinaList folks.
Cheers, Franklin

Franklin,
If you can get ok to go ahead, we could add this info to our crossposting also. I have discovered, from my recent trip, that most people just need a little help to get re-established. In those cases I believe the database would be an essential tool. Also--if you need an extra set of hands for typing or data entry--let me know. I seem to be left to "housework" at the moment. Theres a small testosterone problem here. Let me know if we get the "green" light for the "adoption" project.

Franklin thanks so much again for the offer of help with the database. I know at least with my extended family they would love to get involved in this. The idea of setting up the families that want to help and the families that need help would work. I'm ready to start whenever you are. :D As we put it Lets Roll!
Thanks,
Debby

ADOPT A FAMILY HERE :)
This is an awesome site and project that connects those who want to help directly with those in the shelters to help them with personalized carepackages and correspondence.
