" 23290. not killing pets
by sgtmikesbso, 9/11/05 12:23 ET
it pisses us off to have everyone think that we are killing pets. what you are seeing and reading is the press's spin on things. the press making a bad situation worse. we had a pack of dogs inside our compound that were verry aggressive and attempted to attack our people while they were gahering supplies. we were instructed to put the dogs down to protect human lives. the other incident was when we were in neighobrhoods looking for suvivors. we were attacked by several pit bulls and other large dogs. when you fired your weapon the dogs didn't run away they continued at us.the dogs that were killed were the ones that posed a threat to the police and others who are risking their lives on a daily basis to save members of this community and protect property. after 11 days of this some of us were allowed to visit our families for 3 days and then return. we have lost several members of our department and we are doing the best job that we can. all of this was explained in the interview that i gave however the video was cut up to make us look like we were killing pets, why we don't know.for 4 days we were in 5 to 10 feet of water gathering food and medical supplies for the 3,000 people that were in shelters that we had no food, water or medical supplies for.the first 4 days we worked 20-26 hrs a day and slept for 2-3 hrs. we have seen several people die during this incident, babies to elderly,. this has been very hard on all of us that stayed to protect this parish for you. we all have wives, children and grandchildren, and pets. until you have walked in our shoes dont be judgemental. this is taking it's tole on all of us but we feel a sence of duty to the parish and its residents, human and animal. stay safe... sgt. mike "
this is from nola; during a time when other deputies were posting openly by name with info for parish residents. Minton was being discussed (exorciated) and all of a sudden up pops this post...don't know if it's him or someone speaking for him. I love it when they speak in the first person. This is the only post of it's kind that I have found.
Do you tink it's really him?
This is what we've been fearing. Whether any of these stories are true or not, or if this was actually written by a law enforcement official is largely irrelevant to the immediate situation.
Once the word gets out, true or false, that packs of dogs are roaming the streets of NO posing a threat to human safety and well-being, it's going to become open season on all lost and abandoned dogs, let's face it. It only takes a few trigger happy gun toters to latch onto this unconfirmed rumor as a valid excuse, or a few individuals who are rightfully terrified by it, and the rumors will become a daily reality.
I hate to sound cynical, but I don't think I'm being unrealistic here.
What all this says to me is that the ante is upped on the animal rescue effort.
This is a call to immediate and urgent action on the part of all people. If you don't feel any compassion for the animals, maybe find some. Maybe consider the owners. The emotional distress and suffering involved in this tragedy is beyond description, on the part of the owners, animal lovers, and the helpless animals themselves.
Each of us has the immediate ability to relieve some of that suffering, and tiime is of the essence!!!
Everyone reading this can help in some way, right now. Every little bit is a huge help. It isn't the size of the individual donation you make, but the synergy of the combined effort that is and will make the big difference.
The heroes who are out in the streets every day searching, rescuing, and caring for the found pets need our support right now. They are camping in the rough, sacrificing their own comforts and leisure, and putting their own safety on the line, emotionally and physically. They need our support.
Please donate whatever you can, even if it's only a dollar. Call 1-800-SAVE-A-Pet immediately, and know that you are doing something vital and important.
Please visit our Volunteer Opportunities thread and see if you can plug into one of the many projects that we have listed. Some are very small and will take only a few minutes of your time.
We are responsible for the well-being of these pets. It's a matter of human decency that we do everything we can, as quickly as we can to get them to safety.
This is a truly selfless and heroic effort, very much a reflection of the American soul and spirit. Please find it in your heart to honor that spirit by making a tangible donation of your money, time, and vocal support.
