I am compiling this list from various places on the Internet. It is important that you call or contact the shelter/organization/individual first and find out what they need the most and make arrangements to mail stuff to them. I?ll try to help you, is you have questions, but since I am not affiliated in any way with these places, I may not be much help.
I am have a list of volunteer opportunities and other ways to help that a woman name Kristen compiled. She can be reached at palebluex@aol.com . If you would like a copy of the list, please let me know.
Don?t forget, a Priority Mail box, the big one, is flat rate. You can pack it super full and it will still only be about $7 to mail!
And, please, please, if you hear of other places that need help let me know! I?ll add them to the list. Also, please contact me with changes, mistakes, or updates.
Feel free to contact me at amymisha@comcast.net

PLACES WHERE THINGS CAN BE RECEIVED BY MAIL

Marksville, Louisiana.
We have thousands of evacuees here .Families in our schools, churches, store parking lots, some just laying in yards. They have no place to go. Entire families with small children and nothing but the clothes on their backs. We're taking them into our homes and anywhere we can think to house them. The Red Cross will be slow getting here as they are tied up in Baton Rouge & New Orleans areas. In the meanwhile our community is trying to take care of these people and we're overwhelmed as there are so many! The Relief Coordinator for our parish (like your county) and has given me a list of items we desperately need. We are not asking for money...only items needed for these people. If you can help with whatever you can send we would be most grateful! Myron & I will make sure they are distributed where needed. We have a lot of donations of soap, toothbrushes, etc so we're ok on those for now.
The following are items we have none or very little of and need desperately:
*Baby Items: baby wipes / disposable diapers/ formula / baby bottles / baby shampoo / baby blankets >anything for babies
*Purell or some type hand sanitizer
*Pillows / blankets
*little T-shirts ( babies to childrens sizes)
*Over the counter pain relievers (tylenol, motrin, tums, alka seltzer, pepto bismol, band-aids, etc)
* color books / colors / board games / books (for kids in shelters)
You can send to:
Marksville City Hall
Attn: Myron Gagnard /Hurricane Relief Coordinator
427 N. Washington
Marksville, La. 71351
Phone # to the mayor's office for verification: 318-253-9500

I live in the Houston area and my company is collecting items that will be donated to the the local chapter of the Salvation Army. I called the Salvation Army location on 9/1/05 if those outside of Houston can mail donations and was told yes.
They are accepting hurricane relief donations,
specifically:
(1) Baby Items (diapers, formula, bottled water, wipes, clothing, etc)
(2) Children's Items (clothing, puzzles, small toys, colors, coloring books, etc)
(3) Hygiene Items (soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo conditioner, brushes, deodorant, antibacterial wipes, etc)
(4) Bedding (pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, towels)
(5) Books, Puzzles, and Games for adults
(6) FOOD (Non perishable)
(7) Bottled Water
(8) School Supplies (notebooks, loose leaf paper, folders, pencils, pens, colors, construction paper, rulers, scissors, glue, etc)
If you want to mail in any of the above items, please mark 'Disaster Relief' and mail to:
Salvation Army
1500 Austin
Houston, TX 77002
The two phone numbers I have are: 713-941-5888 and 1-800-SAL-ARMY (this one tends to be busy so that is why I have placed the other one).
If you run into any problems, contact me at soniacoute@yahoo.com and I will give you my home address to mail it to me directly--I will hand deliver to area charities that are handing them to the refugees who have made it to Houston if Salvation Army is no longer delivering.
As many of you know CoffeeCup Software is a socially active company. In the past our users have raised over 1 million dollars for September 11th efforts and over $50,000 dollars for victims of the Asian Tsunami.
Hurricane Katrina has given us a different challenge. We have accessed the situation and have found a way we can all help. Since CoffeeCup Software is located in Corpus Christi, Texas (a couple of hours south of Houston), we are calling upon anyone who receives this e-mail to send 'Goods' to our office. This will directly help the thousands upon thousands of American refugees that will be entering Houston, Beaumont, and througout Texas within the next days and weeks.
Our office will collect what you send and will drive these items by cargo truck to the refugees where they are located. Over 25,000 people will arrive at the Houston Astrodome tonight and we expect many waves of refugees over the next month. We will collect items for the next 60 days and will make trips once a week or more as needed.
Currently many Charitable organizations are overwhelmed and we want to make sure the Families and Children will be given what they really need without wait. Send as much as you wish, we have plenty of storage.
Some items we believe they need are:
Diapers, Baby Wipes, Infant Care Items
Personal Care Items (soap, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, hygeine items)
Clothing (socks, underwear, shirts, shoes, pants, shirts)
Long Distance Calling Cards, Batteries, FM Radios, Walkie-Talkies
Toys (coloring books, crayons, puzzles, any activity toy)
and more....
Our Address is:
CoffeeCup Software
c/o Hurricane Aid
226 South Tancahua Street
Corpus Christi, Texas 78401
You can also order things online at places like Amazon.com, WalMart.com, Target.com, and others and have them sent directly to our offices as well.
Please do not send food, water, or money. This will be handled by Organized Charities. Send what you would personally want if you were placed in a very uncomfortbale position for a very long time with little or no money (use your best judgement).
We will be documenting our efforts by Web Cam and Pictures and these will be posted on our Website soon.
If you would like to Donate money you can do that here:

Someone just emailed me this:
I work in the Student Services division: http://www.mcpss.com/websites/MCPSS/MCPSS of Mobile County Public Schools. I talked to my boss today ( RhondaWaltman, Asst. Superintendent) and she informed me that we will be taking on lots of children from the MS & LA coast. In addition to that we have children on our coast that have lost everything. I want so bad to do something to help out, so I want to coordinate this for the children.
If you or anyone wants to donate, you can send any donations to:
Mobile County Public Schools Attn: Carrie Rozycke,
504 Government St.,
Mobile, Al 36603
The children will need any type school supplies or uniforms. You can find
out what most of our uniform requirement are at this web link:

Anything you can do will greatly be appreciated.
I am a student at Concordia Lutheran University here in Austin, Texas.
I am very upset that all of the Katrina victims need items and the
main organizations sheltering them are not allowing us to get them.
There are several organizations here in Austin that have received
hundreds of offers to house our neighbors. I will honestly distribute
these items to those in need if you want to ship them. If there are
others here in Austin, that want to get with me to coordinate an
honest operation of distributing what people want to send, please
respond to this. No money donations, mainly receiving, organizing,
sorting out, etc. clothing and necessities to those who are needing it.
Everyone wants us to send money so they can help, but I am willing to
set up a Katrina Clothing Relief Bank so these people can get into
some decent clothing. This will be an all volunteer effort,
grassroots, type of deal. Please send only things that you yourself
would wear or put on your child. Diapers, toiletries, toothpaste,
peanut butter, etc. will be taken to Tarrytown United Methodist Church
here in Austin, Texas-The youth are making up relief kits to give. If
people who are housing individuals and families need assistance with
any items we will help them in their kindness and love. This is all
done out of love and kindness. Please-only serious people get respond
to this. For now, I will do a one-woman(and husband) operation and
accept what material items you would like to donate. I will email all
who send items and let them know where their donations go(individual,
church, shelter, people in hotels, families in motels, families housed
with individuals, etc. This will be a strict operation for Katrina
victims. People will be sending items to help those devestated from
the tornado, so that is where their efforts will be channeled. If you
are interested please email me first so I can screen out those who are
not serious. You can email me at katrinaclothingbank@yahoo.com .
My name is Lori and my prayers are with all of you and my thanks is to
God for seeing so many beautiful hearts in all of you offering help on
this board. I will respond with the address to send clothing or to
help me with this charge, please email so we can assess the response
or interest of individuals wanting to send items. Thank you for your
time and God Bless.
A food bank in Louisiana (http://www.foodbanknla.org) is coordinating all donations of food, clothing, and personal grooming items (tootpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, etc.) for the entire region. They specify the best type of food to send is something that is ready to eat, like canned chili. No microwave, no stovetop. And, of course, canned or boxed is better, and they won't accept anything home-made.
Ship stuff here:

SAN ANTONIO AREA
But many generous San Antonians have called us wanting to know how they can donate something besides money.
Would you like to volunteer some of your time?
Do you have a job you can offer?
Bulk food supplies?
Donate vehicles?
How can you adopt a pet?
Whatever it is, the number to call is 211. If you live outside of San Antonio or have a cell phone, you can call (210) 227-4357. Please remember that this is the main line that everyone in the area is using. If you have trouble getting through, please hang up and try again in a few minutes.
The 211 hotline is a public/private partnership between the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar county. This is the central information clearinghouse for all volunteer and donation activities.
Clothes: The relief agencies strongly discourage the donation of clothes.
Your Home: Because of liability issues, the relief agencies are no longer taking information of sharing your home with evacuees. If you have an entire home or large building for evacuees, please call 211.
